Haloperidol & Fluphenazine Decanoate & Risperidone Consta- Dose Calculation
Q: How to calculate Haloperidol/Fluphenazine Decanoate/Risperidone Consta dose from Haloperidol/Fluphenazine/Risperidone Oral dose?
Ans: Rough rule of thumb:
Fluphenazine 10mg/day oral = Fluphenazine Decanoate 12.5mg IM Q 2 weeks.
Haloperidol 10mg/day oral = Haloperidol Decanoate 100mg IM Q 4 weeks.
Risperidone 2-3 mg PO = Risperidone Consta 25 mg Q 2weeks.
Note: Both medication differ in terms of their pharmacokinetics:
* Fluphenazine Decanoate: Effective serum level is established within1- 2 days --> more incidence of side effects few days after each injection.
* Haloperidol Decanoate: Effective serum level is achieved after several weeks --> because of slow uptake --> as a result higher loading dose can be given initially followed few months by taper to baseline dose.
Please add useful basic clinical information regarding long acting antipsychotic injectables here.
Thanks
