A strong dose-response relationship was first demonstrated in 1972 by the Boston Collaborative Drug Surveillance Program in which 718 consecutive hospitalized patients
receiving prednisone therapy were studied.
The incidence of psychiatric symptoms in patients on 40 mg/day was 1.3%, while the incidence in patients receiving 41– 80 mg/day was 4.6%, and the incidence in patients receiving 80 mg/day was 18.4%.
