Pharmacological Treatments of Non-Substance-Withdrawal Delirium

Based on this Systematic Review of Prospective Trials by Friedman et al:

(A) Pharmacological agents shown effective in PREVENTING Delirium (Postoperative):
- Haloperdiol
- Second generation antipsychotics
- Iliac fascia block
- Gabapentin
- Intraoperative propofol sedation (lower doses)
- Ketamine- single dose (during anesthetic sedation)
- IV infusion of Dexmedetomidine- continuous infusion
- Melatonin

(B) Pharmacological agents shown effective in ONGOING Delirium- reducing duration and severity:
- Antipsychotics
